Things may have seemed quiet for a bit on the subject of MIL-STD-129 Department of Defense military labeling standard. Not as quiet as you may think. Reports show both MIL-STD-130 and MIL-STD-129 have been more heavily enforced in the field.

Earlier this year, the US Government made the following announcement to the attention of DLA Suppliers with important information regarding Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) component of MIL-STD-129.

“Effective October 1, 2011, all non-compliant passive RFID shipments will result in a negative impact to suppliers past performance history.” This affects you if you have or your customer has a DoD contract and ships stock to a DLA (Defense Logistics Agency) depot listed in the clause at DFARS 252.211-7006.

The announcement also states: “In addition to tagging shipments, an advance shipment notice is also required. The receiving report in Wide Area Workflow (WAWF) serves as the advance shipment notice. If the advance shipment notice is not submitted before your shipment arrives at the depot, you are in non-compliance.”

Anyone who has been tagging with RFID tags can tell you that the data associated with these tags can create a lot of data, quickly. As it does, it becomes more important for you to automate the data transmission process with the WAWF. Not only will it save workers time, accuracy increases and transmission costs can be minimized or eliminated. Since this is a large part of how you get paid, there is great incentive to get your ASN done quickly and correctly.

With so many deadlines and demands made on business today, it may be that until you know it will be enforced, it may slip behind in your priority. This is not one that should be left to your DCMA inspection to find out. Errors and delays can be expensive, penalties can exceed your shipment’s profit, and now it could cost you your (or your customer’s) contract.

The Tri-City Expo in Manchester NH was a well-attended and fun event. After finding our spot and setting up our booth, we got the chance to roam the floor and check out the exhibits of other companies throughout New Hampshire.

It was gratifying to see the many area businesses of all types and sizes in attendance. We talked to people from a variety of industries: restaurants and catering, banking and manufacturing, photography and publishing, among others.

If you are in New Hampshire or Massachusetts, the Tri-City Expo is a great event for networking with local business people from all kinds of businesses. The show is jointly organized by the Chambers of Commerce from Nashua, Manchester and Concord.

What began as a family effort to send needed provisions to a brother in Afghanistan has blossomed into an organization that aids soldiers and children throughout the Middle East.

Paul and Carole Moore began sending their brother Brian and his fellow soldiers needed but unavailable supplies six years ago. Since then, they and their volunteers have sent so many supplies that the soldiers claim they “carry more supplies than Wal-Mart” and have dubbed them “Moore Mart. ”

Moore Mart volunteers have sent more than 35,668 packages to soldiers over the years, including 3,911 Christmas stockings and greetings to our troops. Their mission has expanded to include local children, sending them new school supplies, toys, and outerwear.

In addition, Moore Mart gives supplies to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital and Bethesda Medical Center in Washington DC.

For the last couple of years, our city has had a nice baseball park, but no team. Here in Nashua we have good minor league teams just north and south of us as well as the Red Sox close by as well.

As a result, it has been tough for teams to make a success of being based in Nashua.

We are happy to have another organization, the Nashua Silver Knights having a try to get baseball established in town again. The Knights play in a new college summer league and so far things seem to be going well.

We were extra pleased that John somehow contrived to win the use of one of the suites for a game recently and a bunch of us took advantage to go to the game on a really nice summer evening. The fact that it was $1.00 beer night was rather nice as well.

Are you in the Southern New Hampshire area? A Nashua Knights game is a great evening out!

As well as being one of the class guys in the labeling business, Winco’s John Burke is known to be willing to try anything.

So this weekend, tempted by a hat with horns and a promise of beer, John took part in Warrior Dash, New England, braving mud, fire, barbed wire and other obstacles!

Looking at the photos, he did pretty well, too! If John can do this, just imagine what he can do for your labeling problems!!
